What Are the Available Restaurant Maps Online?

Traditionally, when people were looking for a new restaurant, they would pick up a copy of Zagat's or some other fancy food guide. But in just a few short years, online maps have come a long way and now offer local information on businesses, shops and eateries too. Sites like Google Maps allow users to create their own maps of favorite establishments that they can save or share with friends and family. There are hundreds of food maps online, although a few noteworthy ideas have risen to the top.

On the West Coast, what could be better than eating a real, authentic Mexican taco out of a truck? With heaping portions, loads of options and mama's homemade guacamole, you just cannot go wrong. You just can't get that level of deliciousness from a restaurant, Californians say. However, it can be tricky to locate these trucks, especially if you are from out-of-town. Thus, Yumtacos was born.

Creator Joshua Lurie-Terrell of Sacramento, California said he had been keeping a list of the best taco trucks for quite some time. "As soon as friends of mine knew I had this list, people were calling me all the time," he admits. From there, transferring the data onto a Google map was no problem. Once the site was live, people could add their own taco truck sightings. Yum Tacos primarily focuses on California, although authentic Mexican taco trucks have been plotted from as far away as Baltimore, Maryland.

Another site, Chinesefoodmap, is based on mapping out the Chinese restaurant locations for Chinese immigrants. Web users will also have access to reviews, menus, driving directions and other local information. Creator Brian Hui first created this site only in Chinese and focusing on Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay Chinese food establishments. However, the site has grown nationwide to metros like Houston, Seattle and Atlanta, and an English version inevitably popped up as well.

Users of Google Maps have created a number of restaurant "mashups" based on the Google template. One of the most notable sites is Menurequest, which features more than 5,000 links in New York, San Diego, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Napa Valley, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Washington DC. Users can visit the restaurant's website, read reviews, get driving directions and make online reservations through this amazing map. These are just a few of the food maps available to culinary curators. Perhaps your very own city has a site designed just for hungry local residents like you.

Travel Tips for the Holiday Season

Ah, holiday travel. The packed airplanes, the crowded airports, the high ticket prices: there's nothing quite like traveling in December to make you long for January. From waiting in a long security line to having your luggage filled with the Christmas presents for your new in-laws delivered to Ohio as you land in Oklahoma, traveling over the holidays can be a real pain. Tis' the season to go crazy.

However, holiday travel doesn't have to be a nightmare. With a few tips and a little effort, things may go smoother than you thought possible. So, put your tray tables up and heed the following advice on traveling during December.

Be Nice to Airport Employees

As soon as you enter an airport, democratic values fly out the window; here, the airport employees have absolute power. It may be easy to get angry with them - you're already running late and you don't have time to wait - but keep in mind that they are doing the best they can: they want you up in the air and out of their hair as much as you do. Being nice and courteous to an airport employee or being rude and unfair could mean the difference between an upgrade and a cavity search.

Fly During Odd Hours

The holidays are the busiest time of the year for airports: everyone has somewhere to go. While there is no way around this fact, there is a way around the majority of the crowds: fly during non peak hours. Flying very early or very late may seen a bit inconvenient, as you could arrive at your destination in the middle of the night, but it will save you so much hustle and bustle that it might just be worth it. The tickets will probably be cheaper too.

Bring a Book or Ten

One of the things that is most stressed at the airport during the holidays is patience: there will definitely be waiting involved. While some people pass this time by tapping their fingers on escalator railings, glancing at their watches, and growing increasingly agitated, one of the best ways to practice patience is with a new book. You'll still have to wait, but with something to engage you, you just might not mind as much.

Give Security a Break

Security lines at the airport can be frustrating. From taking off your shoes to bagging your liquids, it may seem as though the security lines are walking a fine line between safety and privacy. However, keep in mind that airport security was put in place for one reason alone: to save people's lives. Saving lives trumps inconvenience, as it well should. So, give the security people a break and help them out by not wearing objects that will trigger the alarm, removing your coats and jackets, turning on your laptops, and wearing shoes that can be easily removed and placed back on.

Bribe Your Children

The only thing worse than traveling over the holidays is traveling with children over the holidays. When it comes to kids, patience is not a virtue. Because of this, children become easily agitated, upset over having to wait in lines or being stuck in an airport with nothing to do. In order to keep your kids happy - and keep them from driving you crazy - keep them entertained. For younger kids, something as simple as a coloring book may suffice, while the older kids may need a handheld video game or an IPOD to keep them appeased. When all else fails, remind your kids that Santa is particularly observant at the airport: it's in their best interest to behave.

Ship Your Presents

Many people have an aversion to shipping their holiday presents, afraid that the post office will send the wrong package to the wrong house. But, placing presents in luggage and checking your bags can also cause these gifts to travel to the wrong destination. If the present is small enough that you can carry it on, then do so. But, for presents that are too big to be carried, ship them beforehand. Not only will you not have to make room in your suitcase for a present - asking the contents of your bag to "suck in" as you attempt to zip it shut - but you also won't have to deal with the gifts at the airport: you'll have enough to deal with as it is.

Holiday travel is enough to make anyone think that the sky's the limit when it comes to their temper. But, with a little planning and a little patience holiday travel doesn't have to be that stressful. Just relax, think ahead and remember that Santa knows when you're sleeping, he knows when you're awake, and he knows when you're flipping off the man behind the registration desk at Delta.

Learn to Play an Instrument to Save Your Life

Growing up, I always loved music, admired musicians, and still do. When I entered college, a friend in my freshman dorm played the harmonica. I was fascinated and envious. I had always wanted to play an instrument but we could never afford lessons, let alone the ability to buy an instrument. But, when this guy told me he bought it for two dollars, my heart leapt. Even I could afford that paltry sum. So I immediately ran down to the local department store and bought my own. It wasn't until I got back to my room I realized I couldn't play a note. It drove my roommate crazy and so I had to resort to playing in the bathroom or stairwell. I shouldn't use the term "playing" at this juncture. It was making noise on a very irritating level at best. But every spare minute between classes and studying, I tackled "Mary Had a Little Lamb," and other classics.

About three months later, I could play four or five nursery rhymes. Hey, it's a start. With this major accomplishment under my belt, I moved on to show tunes. My family always had Broadway show music around like Camelot and Oklahoma, so, naturally I gravitated toward what I knew. Later, I would try out the Beatles and the Stones. By my senior year, I could play by ear. If I could hear it, I could play it. Playing the harmonica was very therapeutic and satisfying. Then a few years later, when I was at the home of a friend with a piano, they suggested that perhaps my ear training could translate to the piano. I explained that I couldn't afford a piano and they told me to consider a cheap electric organ, which still used the same keyboard.

I found a used table-top organ in the newspaper for about twenty dollars and was excited. It was small with only three octaves, but it played well enough. Within a few weeks, I was able to manage my nursery rhymes, all by ear. I was now in my late twenties and continued with the organ for several years. Finally I traded it in for a larger floor model and learned to play just about anything. There was only one problem: I couldn't read music or play any chords. So I got a few pieces of sheet music for Broadway shows and gave it a try. By the time I was forty, I taught myself chords and how to read music. I bought a cheap keyboard, finally graduating from the organ. A few years later, I bought a proper keyboard with all the great features allowing me to play many instrumental sounds.

With my new toy, I decided to expand my horizons and began collecting sheet music from every genre from classic rock of the 50's to jazz and blues. Recently, I got a guitar for Christmas and am determined to learn to play my third instrument. I actually played in the church band for a few years and really enjoyed the experience. So why am I telling you this? Because it saved my life. No, I wasn't dying of a rare disease where music controlled the cancer or anything like that. Instead, it allowed me to close out the rest of the crazy, stress-filled world and play the melodies and harmonies that could soothe my muddled mind. It could transport me back in time to my college days of the Jefferson Airplane when "White Rabbit" ruled the airwaves or to "Tommy, the rock opera." I could escape the rigors of social or economic issues and relax.

I can't think of a better way to lose yourself or push away the daily grind. It is more than just therapeutic: it's regenerating and energizing. I figure that if a forty year old can teach himself to play, then anyone can. I started with the harmonica. But discovered that it was one of the harder instruments to play because you can't see the holes and, therefore, have to play by ear. You can get a cheap keyboard and tap out a tune in minutes. There are dozens of lessons on the Internet and keyboards that are self-teaching using lights and technology.

The point is, it's one of the least expensive ways to enjoy yourself and can be enriching and rewarding. You don't have to become a concert pianist to enjoy yourself. You can plug in some earphones so you don't annoy anyone around you and it uses almost no electricity. I guarantee, whatever age you are, you can learn to play and will be grateful when you have mastered even a few simple songs. It's fun, entertaining, and will give you endless hours of pleasure. If you have never considered learning to play, make it a priority this year. No, I don't work for Baldwin, but I believe in the power of music. It's an idea and a gift, from me to you. And it just might save your life from boredom.

The Truth About Self Esteem

The truth is, self esteem is a mental fabrication. It has no objective existence of its own like might a part of the body or something in the natural environment. We can all agree on a person's height, weight or even how fast he or she can walk a mile. But, there is no way to measure self esteem that is objective or standardized. That's actually a good thing because it means any person can make self esteem to be what they choose. But, therein lies the problem as well.

We might think a person who is successful in business, productive and wealthy, has "high" self esteem. Yet, that may not be the case. In fact, it may be that their success is a way of compensating for "low" self esteem. Those who strive for superiority, and may in some ways achieve it, can be attempting to overcome feelings of inferiority. Or, imagine a student who gets straight A's year after year. Does that indicate high self esteem? Or, does it indicate fear of punishment? Or, does it indicate competitiveness? On the other hand, we might envision a mother of five children, barely able to make ends meet and who yet is happy and relatively unburdened by the amount of stressors in her environment. How does one gauge her self esteem?

Self esteem cannot be gauged by the outer conditions of our situations or circumstances. It can be determined, in part, by how we interact with and respond to our situations and circumstances. Generally, we can say that a person with high self esteem is

Understanding and supportive of others willing to listen to others a generous giver eager to learn new information able to change beliefs and behaviors based on new knowledge

Low self esteem can generally be characterized as

Overbearing and demanding towards others self absorbed and small minded a stingy taker frightened of risk and challenges resistant to change and growth.

Why is this so? Because the higher one's self esteem, the less dependent one is on any given external structure which might define the self. Low self esteem is based almost entirely on external structures such as rules and regulations, codes of behavior, rewards and punishments. As such, external structures, including other people, can threaten the self, limit the self, manipulate the self and even damage the self. Individuals with low self esteem believe they can "win" by overpowering external structures as opposed to cooperating with external structures. Our western culture's dominance over the external natural world, in contrast to indigenous cultures which are symbiotically cooperative, suggests our western culture has a low opinion of itself. Even the remarkable technological advances put forth by western civilization is not in itself evidence of a high collective cultural self esteem and can be viewed as a way of compensating for a variety of social deficits including slavery, racism, bigotry, prejudice and corruption. The history of brutality and violence exhibited in western society is certainly indicative of low cultural self esteem as it is excessively overbearing, to say the least.

What we often refer to as high self esteem comes about by understanding that the self is not dependent on the external world of people, places and things for its status. Self esteem is something which exists within one's own mind and something which can be enriched and enhanced or degraded and demeaned only by one's own mind. As such, there is no reason to fear external structures such as rules and regulations, new information, strange beliefs, different cultures and certainly people with different colored skin. All such external objects have no real bearing on the self other than what the mind gives it. High self esteem comes from a mind that knows the self to be essentially fluid, malleable and flexible which is required for growth and development. The self is understood to be a process, not a static entity. By way of analogy, consider the self to be like water. It can be solid, liquid or gas. The solid state of water, as in ice, is the self when awake. The liquid is the self when dreaming and the gas when asleep. But, even ice can change its shape. It can be melted and reshaped without losing any of its quality or quantity.

Many modern teachers will suggest a variety of exercises in affirmative positive thinking to build self esteem. Although positive, constructive thinking has it's place and can be a part of building self esteem, all the positive thinking in the world will be for nothing until one believes, knows, that the self, no matter how frozen, can be reshaped without fear of losing the self. The very first step towards changing self esteem, or changing any aspect of the self, is the realization of its adaptable, pliable nature and its underlying reality as a mental fabrication. Neuroscientists refer to this capacity of mental adaptability as "plasticity." And, ultimately, since the self is a mental fabrication, it arises out of a vast array of neural interconnections in the brain, which has this capacity of plasticity. Once this solvent nature of the mind is fully accepted, then positive, constructive thinking can be effective. But, positive thinking alone is not enough. There must also be heat to melt the old frozen lower level self esteem models and a new mold in which to shape the new higher level self esteem beliefs. It is said that new wine must be put into new wine skin. Positive thoughts must be contained within a new belief system which understands the self to be a fabrication of its own making - what one might call a framework of "self-responsibility."
